Glaucoma refers to a range of eye diseases caused by too high pressure in the eyes. In the early stages of glaucoma, there may be no symptoms, but the disease will gradually diminish the eyesight and untreated glaucoma can lead to blindness. The vision loss is caused by damage to the optic nerve. Two categories of adult glaucoma exist: open angle glaucoma and closed angle glaucoma - the former being the most common type. If medication is insufficient glaucoma is normally treated either with laser treatment or by making a small cut in the eye to reduce the pressure. However, surgery cannot reverse an already present vision loss.
